About
CARE-PAC stands for the Care and Support System for Patients and Carers receiving palliative and end-of-life care. It is a three-year, NIHR-funded research project that builds, refines, and rigorously evaluates a digital remote monitoring and support system.
What we are doing, and why
Approaching the end of life is hard — for the person who is unwell, for the people around them, and for the clinicians and carers trying to help. Symptoms shift quickly. Communication is often delayed. Important needs can be missed because no-one is in the room at the right moment.
CARE-PAC is a research project that develops a digital remote monitoring and support system designed to identify problems early, enhance communication, and enable timely, personalised care. The system is being built with the people who will use it and tested in a randomised controlled trial across multiple UK clinical sites.
How we are working
The project begins with a strong co-production phase. Through a series of workshops and iterative design activities, patients, carers, and professionals shape the content, functionality, and integration of the system within existing care pathways. This collaborative approach aims to maximise usability, acceptability, and relevance across diverse care settings.
Following co-production, the system is refined and prepared for evaluation. The randomised controlled trial will assess effectiveness in routine practice, examining the impact of the intervention on:
- patient symptom burden and quality of life
- patterns of healthcare utilisation
- carers’ experiences and support needs
From research to real-world adoption
A key strand of CARE-PAC is its focus on commercialisation and real-world adoption. Alongside the trial, the project actively explores pathways to scale and sustainability — including integration within health and care systems, and alignment with regulatory and market requirements. The goal is a clear route from research into routine practice if the intervention proves effective.
